Women Self help groups had been formed by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa in 1991-1992 to help uplift the livelihood of women, and to ensure that they made a living on their own. These self help groups are now functioning across the state.
To augment the income of women, they are also being employed by the government in Anganwadis and Nutritious Noon meal centres. The government led by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has been implementing various welfare schemes for the upliftment of the economic status of women, a Tamil Nadu government press release today said.
Two sets of uniforms given to school students, who are beneficiaries under the Puratchi Thalaivar MGR Nutritious Meal Scheme, are being stitched by the Women Tailoring cooperative societies. From this year, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has ordered distribution of 4 sets of uniforms to the students. To make sure that the additional uniforms given from this year, are given on time, and considering that the members of these cooperative societies should get additional income, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has ordered purchase of 54 thousand modern tailoring machines at a cost of 54 crore rupees through the Women Tailoring Cooperative societies and to impart training to the members to handle the modern tailoring machines. She has also ordered a hike in the wages of members by five percent every year. This will come into force from 2013-2014.
The funds for the buying of tailoring machines will be obtained as loan from the District Central cooperative Bank and will be distributed to the members through the Women Tailoring Cooperative societies in which they are members. Ten percent of the cost of the tailoring machines which should be paid to the bank as down payment to obtain the loan will be deposited by the government as subsidy. This will cost the government 5.40 crore rupees. Minimal interest will be collected from the members towards the loan and they should fully repay the loan, as monthly installments or yearly installments within a span of 5 years.
Through this initiative of Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, the work efficiency of those working at the Women Tailoring Cooperative Societies will improve and their work will also get easier. This apart, the quality of the uniforms will also improve. They will be able to deliver the uniforms to students within a short span of time and can use the remaining time for stitching clothes for others and earn additional income through that. This tailoring machine will become the exclusive property of the members and will also help them in becoming entrepreneurs, the release added.
